Turkish anti-terror police today detained 45 people

National NewsTurkish anti-terror police today detained 45 people on suspicion of belonging to the Al-Qaeda extremist network and planning attacks, Anatolia news agency reported. The suspects, rounded up in simultaneous operations in eight districts of Istanbul, were being questioned by police, the report said.

A court was to decide later whether they should be charged and jailed pending trial or released. In January, police raided 18 locations in southeast Turkey on intelligence that a local Al-Qaeda cell was planning car bomb attacks. Four alleged militants and a policeman were then killed in a gunfight, and 17 suspects arrested.

Turkey is restoring access to YouTube after the video-sharing website

National NewsTurkey is restoring access to YouTube after the video-sharing website removed the videos that prompted the officials to block access in the first place. The website said that it has removed the videos a prosecutor deemed insulting to Turkey's founding father, who established the country after collapse of the Ottoman Empire Turkey has blocked access to the website in the past, due to clips allegedly insulting Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who died 70 years ago.

They allowed access again after the disputed videos were removed. Turkey has dropped a ban against YouTube after the popular video site Thursday removed videos the country felt disrespected its founder, Mustafa Kemel Ataturk.

Miss Turkey 2008 contest in Istanbul with Paris Hilton

World NewsParis Hilton took part in an impromptu belly dance during the Miss Turkey 2008 contest in Istanbul yesterday. The heiress was a judge at the beauty pageant - but she clearly didn't want to be left out of the limelight. Paris, 27, took to the stage to join a professional belly dancer and was seen twirling and shaking her hips to the music.

'This is my first time judging anything like this,' Paris tells Reuters. 'I'm going to look at how the girls carry themselves, what they look like, the way they dress and what they say.' It almost pains me to post this, just because Paris Hilton could not possibly love being the center of attention anymore and, by putting this up, I'm totally giving her what she wants, but I just had to. I have eyes, and I can see that Paris is an attractive girl, but, when it comes to dancing, she is just an awkward mess.

Nowruz, a joyful occasion marking the ending of winter

National News
Nowruz, a joyful occasion marking the ending of winter and the reawakening of nature, is celebrated across a vast region from largely Kurdish areas of northern Iraq and Turkey to central Asian countries and western China. It also marks the beginning of a new calendar year in Iran, and is the biggest holiday on the calendar. Schools close down for several weeks, people buy presents and special foods, observe specific rituals and visit family and friends. This year the Iran's oil ministry has given the country's motorists, hard-pressed by petrol rationing in recent months, a special Nu Ruz gift allowing them to buy extra petrol during the holiday period, albeit at higher prices.  The deaths of 7 young people from the same town

World NewsSouth Wales police are investigating a possible suicide chain after the seventh hanging of young people in Bridgend in a year. The seven dead are not known to have been close friends but several of them posted personal profiles on the social networking internet site Bebo. Police are worried that youngsters may consider it fashionable to have an internet memorial site and are killing themselves for reasons of prestige.

Last week 17-year-old Natasha Randall was found hanged at her home near Bridgend and a girl who is believed to have been her friend self-harmed a day later. Bridgend MP Madeleine Moon is to raise her concerns on Friday at a meeting of a focus group, which includes the police and the local health trust, schools and council.
